A t-shirt (with a jumper in winter) is preferred, no flammable tops such as lycra are allowed to be worn. Jeans or trousers are recommended to be worn. No vests or crop-tops where skin is exposed is advised. No loose cuffs or torn clothing are to be worn, as these can act as a snagging hazard. Shorts or skirts are also not permitted. Overalls can be worn, however, leather aprons are preferred and provided.
If you have steel toe capped boots or supportive footwear then this is preferred. For examples; trainers, ankle boots, walking boots. Open toe shoes or trousers tucked into boots are not allowed.
We do ask for long hair must be tied back and to remove rings, watches or bracelets in the workshop as these pose a snagging hazard.

You can choose to forge one of the below:
- Beam hooks

Our vouchers are valid for a full 18 months from purchase therefore we are only able to offer extensions in limited circumstances at the discretion of the company.

We operate with limited spaces on weekends and therefore can only accommodate valid voucher requests for these workshops. Please refer to our full Terms and Conditions agreed to upon purchase for additional information.
We offer a full refund on unused vouchers, within 28 days of purchase. The return period will expire 28 days from the day on which you made your purchase. After the 28 days of purchase a full refund will not be permitted. Should you be deemed eligible for a refund, the absolute maximum amount you will be entitled to is the total you have paid to us and will not extend to consequential loss or claimed inconvenience or stress, howsoever caused. No exceptions are made in this regard. If you have taken part in any of our experience days packages, regardless of the circumstances or conditions under which you took part, then this will negate any refund claim. - Drawing out metal to a point, often used in handles, pokers, candle sticks and the Viking knife.
- Rounding, taking square steel and forging the corners in.
- Scrolling, which is a beautiful example of how fine and delicate blacksmithing can be. Rolling the end of a piece of steel, that is usually tapered for a decorative finish. This technique is versatile and is employed on a wide range of items such as the snail, hanging basket bracket and Viking knife!
- Twisting, another decorative technique to give your work flair. This involves heating the steel and twisting it around.
- Texturing, which is used to refine your work and make it really stand out. You will use texturing tools to planish the surface of your work to make it truly unique. This is often used on the candle sticks and boot scraper.

For beginners and experienced blacksmiths alike
1 When you arrive
On arrival, you’ll be signed in and introduced to the smith who will talk through the course step-by-step and help you select which design you would like to make. We’ll discuss what you want to achieve for the day before providing you with protective equipment and a safety briefing.
2 Firing up the forge
The forge will have been lit and heating up before you arrive, so it’s ready to go! You will get an introduction on how to control and maintain the fire of the forge to a forging heat.
3 Punching the Eye
The first technique you will learn is how to punch the eye for the hammer, drifting a bracket to shape the eye for the hammer ready for a handle to be fitted. When shaping the cheek side of the hammer, you’ll use fullering tools and cross peen hammers to manipulate metal by moving the material to produce the desired shapes.
4 Forming the Hammer
When the eye and the area around is shaped you will then move on to forming and shaping the rest of the hammer through a number of different forging processes such as set downs, octagonalising (yes, that is a real word!), rounding and drawing out. Once the hammer is forged you’ll start the heat treating processes to normalize the hammer and prepare the steel for heat treating later.
5 Finishing
Once the hammer is cooled you will move out to the grinding bay where you will use grinders and files to further refine your hammer. Once you are happy with the overall shape of the hammer you will heat the hammer to a certain temperature, quench your hammer, and clean it using the grinders. The next stage is tempering – gently heating and cooling to regain the steel’s toughness.
6 Handling
The last step is handling your hammer. If time allows our team will discuss handle options available and either assist with fitting your handle or support in how to do this yourself at home.
7 Photo Time
It’s great fun working alongside one another and crafting something unique! Once the forging is complete, it’s time to pose for those all-important photos at our wooden stage!
Be sure to dress accordingly, remembering that in the colder months it can get pretty chilly inside the workshop, despite the fires! Please wear long trousers and suitable footwear.

Forging a taper with a good old-fashioned hammer and anvil.
Drawing out metal to a point, often used in handles, pokers, candle sticks and the Viking knife.
Rounding, taking square steel and forging the corners in.
Scrolling, which is a beautiful example of how fine and delicate blacksmithing can be. Rolling the end of a piece of steel, that is usually tapered for a decorative finish. This technique is versatile and is employed on a wide range of items such as the snail, hanging basket bracket and Viking knife!
Twisting, another decorative technique to give your work flair. This involves heating the steel and twisting it around.
Texturing, which is used to refine your work and make it really stand out. You will use texturing tools to planish the surface of your work to make it truly unique. This is often used on the candle sticks and boot scraper.
